“A real Christian”

16-02-15 - real Christian

A.W. Tozer  wrote, “A real Christian is an odd number, anyway. He feels supreme love for One who he has never seen; talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see; expects to go to heaven on the virtue of Another; empties himself in order to be full; admits he is wrong so he can be declared right; goes down in order to get up; is strongest when he is weakest; richest when he is poorest, and happiest when he feels the worst. He dies so he can live; forsakes in order to have; gives away so he can keep; sees the invisible, hears the inaudible, and knows that which passeth knowledge.”

There is a lot of truth to the statement that “a real Christian is an odd number.”  It has always been true of God’s people and always will be.  Some of the language in the KJV of the Bible makes it seem even more so.

In Deuteronomy 14:2 Moses told the Israelites, “For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto Himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.”  God required His people to be different from the nations around them.

According to Titus 2:14, Christ died so that we may be made a “peculiar people.”  Peter described Christians as “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).  Just as the Israelites, we today are required by God to avoid the darkness of the world around us and live in the light.

Heaven will be composed of odd or peculiar people.  May we all strive to be among them!

Have a great week in His service!
