Don’t be a pretender

On April 18 Zachery Logsdon texted his mother that he was being held hostage by a drug dealer and would be killed if he didn’t pay $200.  The money was dropped off.  When someone showed up to get it, police were waiting and arrested Logsdon – the one who came to get the money.  It turns out he only pretended to be a hostage.  His mother didn’t believe him, though – he tried it before to get drug money – and called the police.  Instead of collecting $200, he ended up being charged with filing a false report and resisting arrest and held on a $3,500 dollar bond.  You can’t pretend and fool your mother!

You can’t pretend and fool your Father, either.  Psalm 81:15 says that “those who hate the Lord would pretend obedience to Him, and their time of punishment would be forever.”  Jesus pointed out the pretend Pharisees when He told them, “Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. They worship Me in vain,…” (Matthew 15:7-9).  Don’t pretend to love God.  You are simply wasting your time.  He knows your heart and will judge you accordingly.

Finding treasure

14-04-14 - finding treasure

14-year-old Tana Clymer had quite a find a few months ago.  Last October she was with her family at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, AR, when she found a 3.85-carat diamond worth $20,000.  What a treasure to find!

Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to finding a great treasure (Matthew 13:44).  One major difference is that Clymer sold her diamond to pay for college.  Jesus said the kingdom is worth selling everything else to buy it (:44-46).  Unlike any diamond, it is truly priceless.   Once you find it, don’t sell it for anything!

Before it’s too late

The search continues for Malaysian flight 370.  The urgency now is trying to find it before the batteries in the black box pingers die – and with them most hope of ever finding the plane or its passengers.

Another urgent search continues – the search for souls.  The signal has been sent, and the responsibility rests upon the hearers to come (Matthew 11:28-30; Revelation 22:17).  The Lord wants all to come and “is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9).  Yet, like that black box, someday the signal will cease and it will be too late.  That is when “the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.” (:10).  Then it will be too late.  Now is the time to become the “sort of people you ought to be in holy conduct and godliness,” the time to “be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,” (:12, 14).  Don’t wait until it is too late.
