Sea water and sin

16-02-08 - seawater

What would happen if you were stranded at sea and drank sea water to quench your thirst?  The salt in it would overload your body, causing you to flush out the salt by using more water than you drank.  This would make you even thirstier, making the sea water even more appealing.  Each time you drank it your body would become more dehydrated, until finally you would die from dehydration.  What you longed for to quench your thirst was the wrong thing and only created more thirst and ultimately led to your death.

Sin works much the same way as the sea water: it looks so appealing but is in reality deadly.  James described it this way: “But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.  Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15).  What you long for to satisfy your fleshly desire is not what you really need and ultimately leads to spiritual death.

Just as the only way to survive when stranded at sea is to find fresh water, the only way to survive spiritually is to find living water (John 4:10-14).  Don’t be deceived – and led to your death – by anything else.

Have a great week in His service!
